  16. Make ready 3//4 tbsp jaggery, grated
  17. Get 1/2 cup water

  20. Take 1 tsp black mustard seeds
  21. Take 1 tsp cumin seeds
  22. Make ready 8-10 curry leaves
  23. Take 3 cloves
  24. Take 8 black peppercorns

  1. In a pan, heat oil and mustard seeds, when they start spluttering add the cumin seeds and all the tempering ingridients. Saute for 2 minutes.
  2. Add the onion, saute until soft.
  3. Add ginger paste and garlic paste. Saute until onions start to brown slightly.
  4. Add tomatoes and green chillies. Saute for 2 minutes and add red chilli powder,turmeric power,cumin powder and coriander powder along with 1/4 cup water.
  5. Add the pumpkin cubes and salt.Stir and cover.Cook on simmer until pumpkin is half cooked.
  6. Add the tamarind- jaggery water,crushed deep- fried onions and mix well.
  7. Cover and cook until the pumpkin is soft and cooked through. Check seasoning.
  8. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  9. Serve hot along with Indian flatbread(rotis).

This dish is called as khatta meetha kaddu. Khatta means sour, meetha means sweet and kaddu means pumpkin. So it is sweet and sour pumpkin. To make khatta meetha kaddu you can use either the yellow peel or the green peel pumpkin. If you are using yellow peel pumpkin then you have to remove the hard peel but.
