  2. in medium bowl combine warm syrup, orange peel, orange juice, basil, and, if desired liqeur. cover and let stand for 1 hour. strain mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl; discard basil. cover and chill strained mixture about 2 hours or untill well chilled.
  3. freeze mixture in a 2-quart ice cream freezer according to the manufacturer's directions. if desired ripen for 2 to 4 hours

Combine the water and sugar together in a small saucepan over medium-low heat and bring to a simmer. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then remove from the heat and add in the fresh basil leaves, stirring to combine.
