The ingredients needed to make Haggis Pie:
  1. Prepare haggis
  2. Get 1 tbsp oil
  3. Prepare 250 grams bacon or pancetta
  4. Prepare 250 grams mushrooms sliced
  5. Prepare 454 grams haggis
  6. Get 150 ml chicken stock
  7. Take 500 grams shortcrust pastry
  8. Get 1 beaten egg or milk to glaze
  9. Take 1 onion finely chopped
  10. Prepare 4 tbsp whiskey or rum

This hearty and delicious pie would be perfect for Burns night or any winter night! Making your own shortcrust pastry is easy but you can also use store-bought pastry and cut your workload considerably. Haggis is a much ignored piece of Scottish produce, wheeled out once a year with watery I've never been a big fan of haggis, it seems all fat and gristle to me and Vegetarian Haggis just seemed. that haggis pie looks like what we call empanada, but when i checked the contents, it's more like dinuguan and Haggis is essentially sheep's guts. It looks bad but tastes so good.

Instructions to make Haggis Pie:
  1. heat oil in a large frying pan, add the onion & bacon and cook for 6-8 mins until golden
  2. add the mushrooms and cook for a further 2-3 mins
  3. remove the haggis from the casing, slice and stir into the bacon mixture with the stock and whiskey
  4. cook for 2-3 mins and allow to cool
  5. preheat oven to 200c gas mark 6
  6. cut the pastry in half and roll out 1 portion on a lightly floured surface and use to line a round pie tin or plate approx. 23cm dia.
  7. spoon the cooled haggis mixture into the centre
  8. roll out the remaining pastry and use to top the pie, moistening the edges to ensure a complete seal
  9. use pastry trimmings to decorate pie
  10. brush with egg or milk to glaze and bake in the oven for approx. 35mins until golden
  11. delicious served with mashed potatoes and swede - neeps n tatties or other mashed vegetables such as carrot or celeriac

Cook your haggis according to pack instructions. Keep adding more water to keep it covered. To serve, cut open the haggis and spoon out the filling. Haggis is traditionally eaten with neeps and tatties (mashed turnips and potatoes). If I'm not going to make a pastry pie, I can make a FOOD NERD NOTE: Shepherd's pie is only made with lamb.
